Kabosu the Shiba Inu, Dies at 17

The internet mourns the loss of Kabosu, the beloved Shiba Inu whose iconic image inspired the widely popular "Doge" meme. At the age of 17, Kabosu bid farewell after battling leukemia and liver disease.

Kabosu's owner, Atsuko Sato, shared the heartbreaking news of the dog's passing on Instagram, revealing the underlying health struggles that ultimately claimed Kabosu's life. Despite the global phenomenon that the "Doge" meme became, Sato confessed to not fully grasping its immense popularity, finding some variations of the meme rather peculiar but nonetheless humorous.

The "Doge" meme skyrocketed to fame in 2013, featuring Kabosu's endearing visage overlaid with whimsical, multicolored text in Comic Sans font, depicting a playful inner monologue. This meme craze not only captured the internet's imagination but also inspired the creation of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, further cementing Kabosu's place in digital folklore.

In recognition of Kabosu's cultural impact, a monument was erected in Sakura, Chiba, Japan, in 2023, commemorating the Shiba Inu's contribution to internet culture. Additionally, a "doge" themed manhole cover was installed in a park in 2024, serving as a tangible symbol of the meme's enduring legacy.
